General principles
Library tech is the application and harnessing of available, affordable technology
to library processes in conducting the library’s work, access to library materials,
and the assistance to library and community members in utilizing and furthering of
personal and social goals through technological means.
This is a fundamental library service.
The full application of library technology requires sufficient budget, sufficient
emphasis on maintenance and development, as well as sufficient library knowledge
in handling library and public tech issues as well as future-tech.
1-Year Plan
Review and evaluate this document annually.
Review and evaluate operative library technology annually.
Review library off-site products and services for greater access and affordability.
2-Year Plan
Explore a cost/benefit analysis of an RFID installation, given the inherent
weaknesses of the current inventory/check-in/check-out systems.
Analyze the efficacy of a library self-checkout circulation station, including public
comfort and acceptance of such a system.
Install and maintain a security camera library system.

Consider an internet-access backup system
Provide for staff development in resources and assistance for patrons with non-
library held tech devices.
Review the cost/benefit analysis of automated and non-automated locker and self-
dispensary off-site devices.
Purchase and utilize wireless monitoring tools to determine wireless dead zones or
limited-access signal both within and without of the library
Review extending outside wireless in 4 directions and increasing the length of
signal
Continue to review for efficiency, appropriateness to the job to be done, on an ‘as-
need’ basis and replace library equipment as required.
Ensure that library tech funding remains sufficient to handle current needs,
anticipated needs, and unanticipated opportunities.
Review library off-site products and services for greater access and affordability.
5-Year Plan
Technologically support and facilitate library expansion plans.
Evaluate library off-site tech satellite facilities and placement.
Review replacement of the library’s interior wiring system.
Review property and non-property expansion of the library’s wireless system
Review continued relations with current library vendors as contracts expire.
Continue to review for efficiency, appropriateness to the job to be done, on an ‘as-
need’ basis and replace library equipment as required.
Ensure that library funding remains sufficient to handle current needs, anticipated
needs, and unanticipated tech opportunities.
Review library off-site products and services for greater access and affordability.

Long-Range Plan
Continued review of tech opportunities from the vantage of District viability,
practicality, need and affordability.
Continue to review comment and discussion from all library stakeholders: the
public, community, staff and volunteers and board of trustees.
Tech budgeting should be especially scrutinized given the importance of the role
that tech serves in furthering the mission and purpose of the library.
Staff, volunteer, and public tech education continue to be developed, enhanced and
made available.
Continue to review for efficiency, appropriateness to the job to be done, on an ‘as-
need’ basis and replace library equipment as required.
Ensure that library tech funding remains sufficient to handle current needs,
anticipated needs, and unanticipated opportunities.
