Teens and adults welcome to attend this seminar presented by Emmalie Conner from the Alzheimer's Association. Learn about the importance of good brain health management for diabetics in an effort to lower the risk of Alzheimer's-type dementia. Measures for preventing heart attack and stroke - exercise, healthy diet, medications for conditions such as high blood pressure - might also guard against "more subtle changes" in mental function. This program is helpful for anyone with these health risks or for general information about how managing other health risks may contribute to healthy aging.

Refreshments provided. Take a Cretaceous vacation and visit "The Dinosaurs' Last Seashore" along Colorado's Great Interior Seaway 67 million years ago. Join local author/illustrator, Gary Raham, as he discusses the inspiration for his illustrated graphic short story of discovery, narrated by the mysterious time traveler, known only as "J". Look at fossils of some of the creatures described in the text and see the original artwork. Books will be on sale at the event for $9.50 per copy.

Meet at the Elkhorn Creek Trailhead, 8:00am - Boy Scout Ranch Road, Larimer County 68C. Join Larry and Margie Caswell, Certified Interpretive Guide, to learn earn about the birds, plants, and geology of the Red Feather area while exploring the trails from 3 of the 4 new USFS trailheads. We will walk 2 - 3 miles over 2 1/2 hours as we study the birds, animals, plants, and geology along the walk. Be sure to bring your binoculars, good walking shoes, sunscreen, hat, snack, water, and appropriate clothing for the weather.

Larimer County Search & Rescue Volunteer, Jill Reynolds present Map & Compass class from 10a-12pm. Participants are requested to bring: 1. topographic map---The quadrangle needed is called "Red Feather Lakes"...these can be found at Jax or REI.... or you can get them mailed by ordering through the USGS map center in Lakewood Colorado. 2. compass: a very simple compass that has an adjustable declination and a housing that can turn to read degrees on it. I can suggest one if that would help (a simple N,S,E, W compass is not much use). These are supplies you want to have for the class and if you plan to use map and compass skills in the future.

2-3pm. Dan & Jane Hess have been doing Bear Aware presentations in National Forest and State campgrounds. They represent the Division of Wildlife and use their material. They talk to people to help them understand ways to be safe and enjoy the out of doors. The talks also cover safe hiking and living with Mountain Lions and what to do if you spot one. They have skins, and skulls plus information to hand out. These talks are interesting and fun for both adults and children! Dan and Jane have lots of good stories to help you stay safe. Join Larry and Margie Caswell, Certified Interpretive Guide, to learn earn about the birds, plants, and geology of the Red Feather area while exploring the trails from 3 of the 4 new USFS trailheads. We will walk 2 - 3 miles over 2 1/2 hours as we study the birds, animals, plants, and geology along the walk. Get the Point…. Come help Forest Service archaeologist Abe Thompson unlock some secrets of pre-colonial history on our mountain! If you have points, scrapers, awls, or other stone tools found on your land that you want identified, bring them to the library on August 27. Mr. Thompson will probably be able to tell you who made it, when, and where it came from. Mr. Thompson will also give us a quick overview of migrations around the Red Feather Lakes area and update us on recent findings in Larimer County and the North American continent, for example new findings in Texas have pushed the dates of human habitation in the Americas back to at least 15,500 years ago, predating the time when movement across the land bridge would have been possible due to glaciations. Clovis sites, like the one excavated at Soapstone Open Space date back approximately 13,000 years.

The Red Feather Lakes Writing Group encourages writers to express their talent, improve their craft and support other writers. Current members write a wide variety of poetry, essays and stories. Their manuscripts represent various genres. The writers have found their writing improves in an atmosphere of support, commitment and positive suggestions. The emphasis is on encouragement. Occasionally, visiting authors provide classes or workshops. Interested writers of all levels are invited to visit the Writers Group. The Red Feather Lakes Writing Group encourages writers to express their talent, improve their craft and support other writers. Current members write a wide variety of poetry, essays and stories. Their manuscripts represent various genres. The writers have found their writing improves in an atmosphere of support, commitment and positive suggestions. The emphasis is on encouragement. Occasionally, visiting authors provide classes or workshops. Interested writers of all levels are invited to visit the Writers Group. RFL Writers Group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 3:00PM at RFL Community Library in the Stenzel Community Room. For more information, call 970-881-2664. Presented at 2pm by several poets living in the Denver area. Description: Poetry is often both a solitary and communal art, it requires the intimate space from which one writes and the public space of human to human interaction. In this two-part program, we will engage both of these aspects. In the beginning of class, we will explore innovative processes of composing and thinking about poems through writing exercises. After this, we will present our own work and have an open discussion and Q&A time. Each section will take 45 minutes, so the program should last around 1.5 hours. Sommer Browning is the author of Either Way I'm Celebrating (Birds, LLC; 2011), a collection of poetry and comics, and three chapbooks. With Tony Mancus, she co-founded Flying Guillotine Press. Mathias Svalina is the author of one book of poetry, Destruction Myth (CSU Poetry Center) & one book of prose, I Am A Very Productive Entrepreneur (Mud Luscious). With Zachary Schomburg & Alisa Heinzman, he co-edits Octopus Magazine & Octopus Books. Julia Cohen is pursuing a PhD in Poetry at the University of Denver. These poems are from Triggermoon Triggermoon (Black Lawrence Press, 2011). She is the managing editor of The Denver Quarterly and a co-editor of the small journal Saltgrass.

Community Education: "Hope for Today". Educating adults about depression, bipolar disorder and recognizing suicidal warning signs. Participants receive knowledge of how to respond to a person in crisis and about the valuable resources available in our community. Adult and teen dog owners are invited to attend this informational session presented by Harline Larkey, B.S., M.Ed., owner of Pawswise Dog Training. You will gain a better understanding of how dogs perceive people, how they perceive their world and how that understanding can help you train your dog more effectively. RED FEATHER LAKES HOSTS 9HEALTH FAIR The 9Health Fair will be at Red Feather Lakes on Saturday, May 5, 2012, 7:00 am until 12 noon. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in low-cost and free health screenings. The 9Health Fair will be held at three sites: RFL Community Library (71 Fire House Lane), RFL Volunteer Fire Department’s Ambulance Bay, and RFL Property Owners Association (POA at 58 Fire House Lane). Due to limited parking, please follow parking instructions from volunteer traffic monitors, and then register for 9Health Fair at POA building. 9Health Fair provides low-cost blood tests, including blood chemistry, blood count, prostate specific antigen (PSA), and Vitamin D. New this year is Hemoglobin A1c blood screening, which measures average blood sugar control for past 2 to 3 months. Please DO NOT eat 12 hours before having blood drawn (diabetics should not fast). Please DO drink plenty of water and take your prescribed medications. Participants must be 18 years of age and older. All participants must start first at POA building for registration and blood pressure check. Blood screenings will be offered at RFLVFD Ambulance Bay with cashier station in the Stenzel Meeting Room at Red Feather Lakes Community Library. Erik Moore will be presenting a small lecture and hands-on workshop that explores current trends and technologies that are having a disruptive and transformational effect on people lives, careers, and relationships. The cloud, mobile devices, and social networking technologies influence our lives increasingly, and understanding where trends are going is important. After a Q&A session Erik will poll the audience and present hands-on experiences that relate to their interest that can include advanced uses of the Internet, mobile device apps, a fun introduction to programming, digital security and safety, or advanced skills in office applications. Erik Moore is the Associate Dean of the College of Engineering & Information Sciences at DeVry University, Colorado. His research on information security and virtual systems has been presented at international conferences in places like Luzern, Switzerland and Hawaii. He oversees undergraduate and graduate programs in Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Information Systems, Network & Communications Management, and Multimedia Design & Development.

Noah Newman, Research Associate, Colorado Climate Center at CSU, will be presenting a program on CoCoRaHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network) - a unique community-based network of volunteers started in Colorado and now in all 50 states and Canada. From her diagnosis with Alzheimer's until her death, Wayne and Terry Baltz were caregivers and advocates for Terry’s mother. What the books and experts and many lay persons told them — that this is a horrible disease which only gets worse each day — proved true. But it proved to be only part of the truth, overlooking entirely the love and joy and deepening of relationship the three experienced, not only in spite of but often as a direct result of the illness. Come hear the authors' story of their experiences over four amazing years. They can also discuss the memoir writing process that resulted in their Colorado Book Award Finalist Memoir, "Fierce Blessing: A Journey into Alzheimer's, Compassion, and the Joy of Being."

Come volunteer for a search dog practice! We'll all meet at the library at 8:00am for training and then proceed to Chicken Park to hide for the dogs. "Bear Aware is a program which is divided into two sections. Bears And Mt Lions. I do the first half hour telling people who come to our program, How to Live with Bears whether living in bear haitat, camping, hiking, fishing etc. The key is safety for humans & for the Bears. Colorado has a law which states that once a bear invades property and causes damage , must be tagged. If it returns to the same area, CO Parks and Wildlife Rangers are required to Euthanize. I have handouts about all these points. Dan will spend the second half hour talking about Mt. Lions stressing the same points for safety."

Canine massage is a wonderful way to keep your active dog in good shape or a geriatric dog feeling well. Massage helps improve circulation, range of motion, and reduce pain for dogs just as it does for humans! We'll see a demonstration and answer questions about how to work on your own dog.
